New Gym Floor Reflects Major Athletic Strides

October 10, 2012 - A new era in Brevard Community College athletics began Tuesday evening when the ribbon was cut on the new wood floor in the Melbourne Campus Gym known as The Coliseum.

College President Dr. Jim Richey welcomed faculty, staff, students and athletes 鈥� along with the volleyball teams from BCC and Miami Dade College that played the first contest on the floor 鈥� to the unveiling.

The floor replaces a composite surface used since the gym opened in 1975, and will provide more cushioning to help prevent injuries to athletes.

It will also serve as a recruiting tool in attracting athletes in volleyball and men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 basketball.

鈥淏ut what鈥檚 also important is that the floor symbolizes the major strides we are taking in BCC athletic programs, providing opportunities for 129 student athletes and enhancing the collegiate experience for everyone at the College,鈥� Dr. Richey said.

鈥淲ith our excellent coaches, dedicated players and student support, I am confident that our athletic programs will shine for years to come.鈥�

BCC's mascot Titan strikes a winning pose as College President Dr. Jim Richey, Melbourne Campus Provost Sandy Handfield and Athletic Director Jeff Carr cut the ribbon to officially unveil the new gymnasium floor.

BCC has experienced much success the past three seasons, with its women鈥檚 soccer team recently ranked No. 1 nationally, its basketball program undergoing an impressive rebirth and its volleyball team on the rise.

Its women鈥檚 softball and basketball teams, and men鈥檚 golf team, have also continued a streak of post-season tournament play.

The college will launch new varsity sports in men鈥檚 soccer and women鈥檚 tennis starting in fall 2013. That will give BCC nine intercollegiate sports, making it the only NJCAA institution in Florida with that many programs.

Other highlights in the months to come include:

  • The College will host the NJCAA Division I women鈥檚 soccer national championships Nov. 11-17 at Melbourne Central Catholic.
  • A new clubhouse will be built at Bruce Bochy Baseball Field to be ready for spring 2013 season.
  • A coach for the new men鈥檚 soccer program 鈥� Oliver Twelvetrees from Barton Community College in Great Bend, KS 鈥� has been hired and starts in December.

Meanwhile, BCC has also begun an intramural athletics program that debuted on Oct. 4 with flag football. Volleyball and basketball will follow in spring 2013.
